چکیده

Foot orthoses are prescribed to improve posture in the foot and ankle. The decade of the 1980s witnessed the widespread use of foot orthoses in an attempt to produce relief of a variety of symptoms in the foot and leg and pathologies due to hindfoot and/or forefoot malalignments. While it is documented that many overuse injuries of the lower limb can be relieved with the use of foot orthoses, it remains unclear how an orthosis can produce this effect. The following review examines the use of foot orthoses in various foot pathologies and their relationship to the biomechanics of the foot. © 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd Current Orthopaedics (2000) 14, 464–469 © 2000 Harcourt Publishers Ltd doi: 10.1054/ cuor.2000.0150, available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on

Challenging the foundations of the clinical model of foot function: further evidence that the root model assessments fail to appropriately classify foot function

BACKGROUND The Root model of normal and abnormal foot function remains the basis for clinical foot orthotic practice globally. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between foot deformities and kinematic compensations that are the foundations of the model. METHODS A convenience sample of 140 were screened and 100 symptom free participants aged 18-45 years were invited to participate. Th...

Foot orthotics in the treatment of lower limb conditions: a musculoskeletal physiotherapy perspective.

Orthotic therapy is frequently advocated for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and injury of the lower limb. The clinical efficacy, mechanical effects, and underlying mechanism of the action of foot orthotics has not been conclusively determined making it difficult for practitioners to agree on a reliable and valid clinical approach to their application and indeed even their fabrication. Th...

Generation of subject-specific, dynamic, multisegment ankle and foot models to improve orthotic design: a feasibility study

BACKGROUND Currently, custom foot and ankle orthosis prescription and design tend to be based on traditional techniques, which can result in devices which vary greatly between clinicians and repeat prescription. The use of computational models of the foot may give further insight in the biomechanical effects of these devices and allow a more standardised approach to be taken to their design, ho...

Functional foot orthoses

then there are a wide range of devices which are foot orthoses. This range would include footwear with adaptions, ‘simple’ insoles and pads and the rigid foot orthoses produced from casts of the foot. It is the latter of these on which this article concentrates as it is these orthoses which suffer from a general lack of understanding of their principles and applications. This is not to say that...

The Efficacy of AFO Use in Ambulatory Children with Spastic Diplegia

Introduction Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs) are prescribed for ambulatory children with spastic diplegia to improve biomechanical alignment and functional capability. Orthotic prescription is often based upon clinical experiences, treatment paradigms (biomechanical vs neurodevelopmental), and the perceived desires of the child/family. Previous investigations have reported that AFO use in ambulatory...
